End of Public Health Emergency

Today sees the last day of the Public Health Emergency (PHE) that was declared back in March. This means that as a club we are now able to further relax the restrictions that we imposed as a result of the PHE. From tomorrow, on course, rakes will be returning to bunkers and the inserts in the holes will be removed and we can play golf as it was meant to be played. Equipment wise, it will be OK to share a buggy; but not yet a hug and a kiss !

In addressing the nation yesterday, Charmaine Gauci, Malta’s Superintendent of Health, stated “The public must continue to cooperate by using masks, visors and hand sanitisers on buses and in shops and observe social distancing to protect themselves and those around them.” In answer to a question from Times of Malta about whether the end of the emergency would mark the removal of all the remaining measures, Gauci clarified that certain safeguards will have to remain in place and will still be enforceable by law.

With this in mind we are asking you to continue social distancing around the club and its members and to stay vigilant at all times when socialising in the bar and restaurant. We must stress that the onus lies with the individual to social distance and if you feel uncomfortable that someone else is invading your personal space then simply ask them to move away. Likewise, in the bar and restaurant, if you do not feel confident to go to the bar to get served, our caterers will continue to offer and safe and secure table service.

Throughout the crisis we have acted ‘as one’ in a responsible and courteous manner.  Let us please continue to follow that ethos as we move forward ‘as one’.

Enjoy your golf and be careful out there.

The new RMGC Captain

Richard Waterhouse has recently taken over the Captaincy of the Royal Malta Golf Club. Richard, a native of deepest Surrey, enjoyed a 23 year career in Her Majesty’s Royal Marine’s serving his Queen and country literally all over the world. Sport for Richard has been a part of his life from an early age, initially football, then hockey to a high standard (National Premier League in both England and Hong Kong, also represented the Royal Marines, Royal Navy & Captain of Combined Services). Richard’s foray into golf began in Bermuda at the Port Royal Golf Club, which boast a par 3 of 235 yards over the Atlantic Ocean ! Because of his extensive travel during service, it was not until after leaving the Royal Marines that Richard was able to dedicate a little more time to golf, becoming a member at very challenging Saunton Sands in North Devon and Wareham Golf Club in Dorset, before joining Royal Malta Golf Club in 2014. Prior to taking up office as Club Captain, Richard has served the RMGC as Competition Secretary for two years and Vice-captain for a similar stint.

Richard and his Committee are hard at work preparing a full golfing calendar for the summer and coming season and looks forward to meeting you all – either in the rough or by the bar !

Anne’s off ! Again !

Anne Thompson, a long standing member of the RMGC, is by now famous within the club and local charitable fund raising circles for her annual efforts to raise funds for good causes.

This year Anne is walking the 285km from Porto to Santiago in aid of Hospice Malta https://hospicemalta.org/

Notwithstanding COVID19, the new normal, and everything else that is going on, the walk will commence on the 27th July 2020 and end on the 16th August 2020. Anne will be paying all her own expenses, as she always does, and everything she raises in sponsorship will go directly to the Hospice.

We invite you please to sponsor Anne to whatever amount you feel able and support one of our own in what is a very difficult time to find sponsors.

Anne’s email address is [email protected] and a simple email to her pledging your support will be enough at this stage. Anne will also be placing collection boxes at the RMGC.

Thanking you in anticipation.
