The Wedgwood Trophy is the RMGC’s second major competition of this season, and is scheduled to be played on Saturday 13th (medal) and Saturday 20th (stableford) March over two rounds. More about the comp later. First, a bit of history behind this prestigious and important event.
The Wedgwood Trophy
The Wedgwood competition was first held in 1992 season. The trophy itself was presented to the RMGC, then captained by Mr John Earland, by one of its own members Mr John Delia of firm Gio. Batta Delia, local representatives of Wedgwood china and porcelain.
Patrick Delia, John Earland, and John Delia
Besides being an accomplished golfer (two holes-in-one!) and a keen tennis player, John Delia was an all-round sportsman who excelled in football, where he represented Malta amateurs at international level. John was a respected gentleman, a loving family man, and a friend to all at the RMGC until he passed away in 2011. John’s legacy at the RMGC lives on also because his grand-daughter Emma is Mrs Ruud Critien, two-time Club champion 2015 & 2018. May John rest in eternal peace.
John Delia in 1991
John Delia was very much involved in the format of the Wedgwood competition. Originally, it was held in stableford-medal format over two consecutive Saturdays. However, more recently that reversed to medal-stableford so as to allow for multi tee starts, lunch-for-all, and prize giving on day2. Regrettably, the pandemic situation still prevails, and day2 will see all tee off the 1st hole.
The winner of the Wedgwood Trophy is the one with the most points after the stableford score is deducted from the medal score. As it is a major, double order of merit points are awarded. While all RMGC members with a handicap index are eligible to participate, there is a maximum playing handicap allowance of 18. The handicap played on day 1 is retained for day 2. Day 1 will be a “matched” draw off four selected tee time zones; day 2 will be in reverse day 1 score order.

The RMGC sincerely thanks Laferla Insurance, and especially its own Keith Laferla, for the kind support and the generous sponsorship of the Wedgwood competition.

Next week’s competition is the IBM March monthly medal & The Gilmore Girls trial monthly stableford. In addition to the medal players there will be allocated tee slots on Thursday for The Gilmore Girls with a playing handicap of 39 & over who will play a qualifying Stableford competition. This proved to be very successful last month so let’s keep it running.
With International Women’s Day coming up soon – March 8th the Ladies Committee would like to suggest that we contribute in some small way to bring a little joy to those ladies less fortunate than we are. In conjunction with Fem.Community action-for-good-events, we would like to ask you to bring along a bag which you no longer use or have need for & in it place the items listed. These bags, if brought to the club on Thursday March 4th, can then be delivered to one of the drop off points later that afternoon.
Last month we introduced a Qualifying Stableford for the ladies that have a playing handicap higher than 39 to run alongside the ladies that are playing the Monthly Medal.
The next IBM Monthly Medal is due to be played on the 4th March (Saturday play for this is the 27th February). So, once again we are running a Qualifying Stableford – Gilmore Girls. Booking for this competition is now open and we hope to see a number of you ladies sign up for this. Any problems signing up, please do not hesitate to contact any of the committee or the ladies in Reception.
Prizes, max. one per player, to be announced by Malta Golf Association shortly. These include:
a. Best nett overall 1st – 5th place,
b. Best nett youth (<18),
c. Best nett senior (>65),
d. Best nett Day 1,
