2-man Scramble, 28th August – results

An exciting finale to a closely fought-out Scramble saw the top five pairs being separated by just one point and closer-than-norm count-backs. Nice to see brothers Finley and Noah Gratil team up and to be drawn into a four-ball with two RMGC past champions Andy Borg and JJ Micallef.

Finley & Noah, playing off hcap 2, scored at nett 60 to tie with Matthew Mangion & David Urpani (hcap 5). The Gratils took it not on back9, not back6, not back3, but on back1 (18th) with a birdie 3. Well done bros! Andy and JJ (hcap -1) clinched 3rd place on a back9 count-back off Paul Howes & Luke Kelly (hcap 5) and Michael Dunlavy & Peter Coleman (hcap 9).

1st FinleyG & NoahG, €65 each,

2nd MatthewM & DavidU, €45 each,

3rd AndyB & JJM, €25 each.

Next week we’ve got the GolfbreaksSPORTSvox better-ball. Make up your own pairs and enter via Clubv1/HDID. Fantastic prizes, all golf holidays!, to be won for the top three pairs.

The Men’s competitive (OOM) season starts 9/10/11th September with the BOV Monthly Medal. Get yourselves ready and in good form!

Some good scores in fairly oppressive heat.  Regretfully had to DQ an unsigned card.  This is a mandatory DQ alas, along with other categories such as wrong gross, no handicap on card.  Please check before handing in your scorecard.

Reminder also that the 2 wallets, prize and comps, have been merged.  This simplifies the transactions so you no longer need to ask to transfer prize winnings to your competition wallets.

Round9 of the Servizo Mixed Summer Series is open for booking.
Servizo® Summer OM points are in the accompanying charts – overall prize best lady, best man after Rd 9, double points in Rd 9. Chart 2 – Cumulative points top 20 scorers

New Course Ratings and Handicaps

The Board of Management (BOM) met for a special meeting on Monday 23rd August 2021 to consider the new Course and Slope Ratings as well as the new Playing Handicaps by Index as recommended by the European Golf Association (EGA), endorsed by the Malta Golf Association (MGA) and advised to Members in a document from William Beck (WB) on 16th August 2021.

The BOM was happy to adopt these recommendations in full. The new Playing Handicaps will come into effect from Thursday 9th September and will be subject to review at the end of the 2021/2 season. New scorecards are being printed in time for the start of the new season.

The BOM had detailed discussions with WB, representing the MGA, and with Peter Bromley, official Course Rater for the EGA, who led the team in early August that measured and rated the RMGC Course based on systems and software that has now been accepted by golf courses worldwide. All measurements were based on the current course layout and state of the course at that time. The only exception was the 16th hole as the green is currently being resurfaced. Play on this green is scheduled to be moved back from the temporary green by the end of September when the measurements of the hole and the new green will be reconfirmed.

WB produced an analysis of the differences between ratings for Men and Ladies using the four different tee boxes. This was circulated to all members on 23rd August. A number of Stroke Indexes have been changed to satisfy the ‘triad’ system described in Appendix E of the Rules of Handicapping. For example, holes 4, 6 and 16 now have lower indexes whilst holes 10 and 14 are higher.

Playing handicaps of higher handicap golfers (in particular) are likely to decrease until Handicap Indexes are increased as results are input from 9th September. Members who do not play many competitions regularly are advised to submit scorecards on general play.

The Captains’ Committees will be advising use of the different tees shortly.

Servizo® Round 8 Startsheet

Good Morning, Round 8 of Sevizo® Stableford Competition Start Sheet.

Comps & Prizes wallets

Dear members,

For the sake of practicality and convenience, it has been agreed at the Board of Management that the “Comps wallet” and the “Prizes wallet” may be amalgamated into one – the “Comps wallet”. The use of the Prizes wallet is now obsolete.

Members’ balances held in their Prizes wallet have already been transferred into their corresponding Comps wallet, and the balance of all Prize wallets is now nil. For the purpose of transparency, all transactions within the Prizes wallets for the period from inception 1st March 2021 until closure 25th August 2021 (25 weeks) will remain visible on ClubV1 for some time.

The purpose of the new Comps wallet is for members to:

  1. top-up with own cash/cleared funds,
  2. settle competition entry fees,
  3. pay for rentals,
  4. redeem Golf Shop purchase vouchers,
  5. receive competition winnings (prizes and Two sweep).

with kind regards,

Victor Denaro, Captain

Golfbreaks/SPORTSvox mixed event, 4th/5th September 2021

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Golfbreaks (UK), and to the support of SPORTSvox (represented by our own Neill Simpson), the RMGC is pleased to announce this attractive curtain-raiser to the Club’s competitive season.

This mixed, one-round (18 holes), better-ball, stableford competition is open to ALL members with a WHS handicap. Choose-your-own partner, and pairs may be entered as men, ladies, or mixed. Juniors (min. age 13) must be paired with an adult.

The competition will have a playing handicap allowance of 90%, after which there will be a max. playing handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies. The men and the ladies will play off their own tees. Pairs will enter themselves into one of the four available time zones on Saturday 4th or Sunday 5th. Individuals may enter themselves “solo”. The CompSec will pair up all individual entries by handicap immediately before the start-sheet draw, which will be made on Friday 3rd September late afternoon.

1st Prize: an invitation to the winning pair to participate at the Golfbreaks UK finals event at Apsley Guise & Woburn Sands (Milton Keynes) on Friday 22nd October. Cost of flights, 3-day car hire, and 2-nights accommodation at De Vere Staverton Estate is included. Upgrades will be possible. If the UK finals event does not take place or the winners cannot travel to the UK, then the winners will be offered an alternative European golf destination or €350pp redeemable vouchers with Golfbreaks.

The winners of the Golfbreaks UK finals event will have the opportunity to travel to Florida in March 2022 for some golf and to soak up the atmosphere of the Players Championship at Sawgrass.

2nd Prize: a 3-nights + 2-rounds golf trip for two to Pestana Golf Resort (Algarve, Portugal). Upgrades, or €250pp redeemable vouchers with Golfbreaks will be possible.

The entry fee is €12.50 per person, or €25 per pair. Book now on ClubV1/HDID/PSI.

Participants will automatically be granting the RMGC permission to give their email address to Golfbreaks for confirmation of entry and to receive ongoing communication from Golfbreaks. Prize winners will always be responsible for their own (a) medical tests, and (b) alternative arrangements, when travelling.

Enjoy your golf,

The Competitions Committee
