The Royal Malta Golf Club proudly hosted the 8th edition of the Malta Golf Association Junior Open 2026, welcoming a record field of young golfers from across the globe. Organised by the Malta Golf Association, the prestigious event was played over three demanding days in extremely challenging weather conditions, with strong cold winds reaching near gale force and persistent rain showers testing the resilience of all competitors.
Record Participation and International Presence
This year’s tournament attracted an unprecedented 111 participants, including 99 international players representing 23 countries, alongside 12 local golfers. The largest groups travelled from Austria, Germany, Poland, and Turkey. Endorsed by The R&A, the event contributed to the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), reinforcing its growing international stature.
Competition Format and Categories
The competition was contested over 54 holes in a medal stroke play format, with winners determined by the lowest gross aggregate score. Players competed across three age categories:
Under-21
Under-18
Under-16
In keeping with the tournament’s commitment to inclusivity, boys and girls competed on equal terms, with awards presented equally across all categories. The overall Malta Junior Open champions were selected from the under-18 and under-16 divisions.
Strong Field Despite Challenging Conditions
The quality of the field was evident, with 33 players competing off scratch or better, and a further 43 players holding handicaps below 5.0. Out of 333 rounds played, only twelve scores of level par (69) or better were recorded, highlighting the difficulty of the conditions. Just two players managed to finish with an aggregate score at or below par.
Category Winners
In the Under-21 Girls, Austria’s Julia Bauer secured victory with a three-day aggregate of +27, finishing five shots ahead after a closely contested battle with compatriot Elena Doberauer.
The Under-21 Boys title went to Oliver Davis (Australia/Malta), whose strong opening round laid the foundation for a winning aggregate of +1, finishing seven shots clear of Italy’s Federico Randazzo.
The Under-18 Girls category delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the tournament. Austria’s Chiara Bauer-Mitterlehner triumphed following a sudden-death playoff against Germany’s Isabel Sophie Morato Brede, sealing victory with a निर्ण decisive birdie.
In the Under-18 Boys, Malta’s Aleksandr Vagimov produced an outstanding performance to secure victory by three shots ahead of Stephan Csongei, while Germany’s Malte Seidemann recorded the best single round of the tournament with a three-under-par score.
Austria’s Lisa Huszar claimed the Under-16 Girls title with a four-shot victory over Paula Dutzler, while England’s Ezra Hartland won the Under-16 Boys category with a composed final-round performance.
Overall Champions
In accordance with tournament rules, Chiara Bauer-Mitterlehner and Aleksandr Vagimov were crowned overall winners of the Malta Junior Open 2026. Notably, Vagimov made history as the first Maltese player to win the tournament.

Best Net Score (Local Player): Grace Lewen Wang, finishing 25 under her course handicap
Hole-in-One: Marie Schweighofer (Austria), achieved on the 13th hole during Round 2
Junior Academy Competition
Running alongside the main event, the RMGC Junior Academy Eagle competition provided an opportunity for emerging local talent to compete. Flynn O’Neill claimed top honours, finishing level to his handicap, ahead of Pelyun Chai and Krista Formosa.
