Season’s Greetings

Dear Fellow Members,

As another eventful year draws to a close and we spend our second Christmas under the new normal it is perhaps appropriate to take a look back at the year both from a golfing and social perspective.

Aside from a few days back in spring, we have managed to keep the RMGC open for play throughout the year. We have seen strong membership numbers, the partial return of sports tourism and semblances of normality; albeit often viewed from behind a mask!

On course, the arrival of our new Greens Superintendent, Lorenzo Basco, coupled with the strengthening of the overall greens maintenance team, has seen a step change to quality and presentation. That said, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the sterling work carried out over the past 18 months by our General Manager, Phil Luxon, who aside from his club side duties managed the small number of greenkeeping staff until Lorenzo’s arrival.

2021 saw us welcome a new Captain to the RMGC. Victor Denaro took the helm in June 2021 and has settled nicely into the challenging role. He has, together with his committee, re-established a full golfing calendar and on-course life has returned to pretty much pre pandemic ways. Socially, the club is still subject to operating within Public Health restrictions. However, we have seen the return of some social functions and gatherings. October brought us our first Creasy Cup dinner since COVID began. The event, held at the Malta Hilton, was heavily patronised and a huge success – especially given that vaccine passports and distancing was the order of the day/night. Presentations after competitions have returned and the Section formally known as Ladies even got to have their annual Christmas Bash!

Throughout the year the safety and enjoyment of the membership has been the sole focus of the club. This will continue to be the case going forward to 2022 – sticking firmly to our rigorous and commonsensical approach. Thus far, the pandemic has proved to be a not insignificant challenge, but, we remain ever hopeful that the New Year will bring with it new hope.

Wishing you all a very merry, happy and healthy Christmas and a joyous new year.

Yours in golf,

Paul Stoner
